When Ewan McGregor raced onto the screen, with a skinhead and crazed eyes, in Danny Boyle’s generation Y movie, we all took note. An electrifying soundtrack, pathos and humour rolled into a story that said a lot about the 90s; Boyle blew us all away. Yet this incredibly successful director and most of the cast have maintained that there would never be a sequel.
So… last week Ewan Mcgregor did more than hint that Irvine Welsh’s book ‘Porno’, which followed ‘Trainspotting’, was being worked on by scriptwriter John Hodge. There have been a lot of rumours over the last few months, so you could probably bet a monkey on this project being in development right now. With the same cast set to be playing middle aged versions of themselves, ‘Trainspotting 2’ just might be the sequel that gets an audience who thought nothing could beat Quentin Tarantino, back into a cinema.
Ewan McGregor has long buried the grudge that he held against Boyle since Leonardo DiCaprio was cast in ‘The Beach’ (“it should have been mine”) which Boyle allegedly had promised McGregor. We all have to grow up sometime – perhaps the sequel will star all the favourites from the first film, in their slippers snoozing in front of the TV, slyly watching ‘Men and Motors’ while the wife and kids are asleep? Unlikely. After the 2012 UK Olympics, Danny Boyle is sure to pull something brilliant out of his baggy and knock us all out. Again.
