Top 10 Most Anticipated Films Of 2017

Written by Patrick Alexander
2017 is truly shaping up to be the year of the sequel, with dozens of franchises developing, or rebooting, in an attempt to captivate audiences in a blossoming international film scope. As a movie-going audience, we’ve got a lot to look forward to. From another attempt to make Spidey amazing (greetings, Tom Holland), to a potential final act in the man-versus-monkey conflict, 2017 is bringing many familiar faces back to the silver screen.
As with any year, there will be flops, there will be extravaganzas, there will be booming successes, and most importantly there will be plenty of debates and discussion for all us movie geeks. Here’s our rundown of the 10 most anticipated films to watch out for this year.

Honorable mentions to:
Alien: Covenant (Ridley Scott, the G.O.A.T when it comes to alien space stuff)
Spiderman: Homecoming (not quite the most exciting superhero film of the year);
Beauty & The Beast (the Disney live-action revolution continues);
The Lego Batman Movie (everything is awesome, part 2);
Kong: Skull Island (who doesn’t wanna see a giant monkey, right?)

blade-runner
10) Blade Runner 2049
Set thirty years after the original film, with one of the hottest directors in Hollywood, Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario), at the helm, and surefire superstar Ryan Gosling taking on the role of a new blade runner, this savvy sci-fi franchise reboot is set up for major success. It also helps having a built in fan-base and heaps of nostalgia, allowing for old Harrison Ford to reprise his former role (for Mr. Ford’s reference, please contact Star Wars).
 wonder-woman
9) Wonder Woman
It’s been a dozen years since a female comic book superhero had her own stand-alone film. That’s right, it’s twelve years since Elektra’s spectacular failure in 2005, a catastrophe which has had studios vehemently shying away from female-led superhero films…until now. After Gal Gadot’s fun cameo in last year’s ‘Batman v Superman’, it’s down to Wonder Woman to build major buzz for the upcoming ‘Justice League’ film, also due out this year.

8) Baywatch
2017 is going to be an absolute garbage year for comedy films. However, amidst the rubbish, is one trendy 90’s redux with a real shot at putting viewers in seats this summer. Throw in a comedic wombo-combo of The Rock and Zac Efron, plus the directing skills of Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses), and we’ve got a good chance of at least some laughter this year.
logan
7) Logan
Another year, another walk down mutant lane. However, what makes ‘Logan’ so special is the fact that this is set to be Hugh Jackman’s last appearance in his role as the iconic Wolverine, a run that has spanned a meager seventeen years and nine X-Men films (including cameos). In what’s being described as “a very different style” of X-Men movie, set in an alternate universe, there’s much to be excited about with regards to Jackman’s (potential) final donning of the Adamantium claws.
 t2-trainspotting
6) T2: Trainspotting
A first ballot choice for random sequels I desperately would’ve killed to have had released when I was in college. Twenty years later, Renton, Spud, Sick Boy & Begbie return to teach us more wild things about the casual lifestyle of a heroin addict, and hopefully we will see the gang get into lots more trouble as they chase the dragon. You made us wait long enough, Danny Boyle, now it’s time to deliver.
dunkirk-
5) Dunkirk
You had me at “Christopher Nolan”. And those insane teaser trailers they were showing in cinemas, with the ticking stopwatch – perfect. Nolan is on a strong run right now, as one of the few must-see directors in the game. He could literally put out a film about ceiling tiles, and we would all probably watch it just for the gripping cinematography.
john-wick-2
4) John Wick 2
Ask any serious film dorks what some of their favorite movies of 2014 were. Go ahead, I’ll wait…You’re damn right ‘John Wick’ was in there! A well-kept secret by many, this action flick has quickly blossomed into a sneaky-good cult classic within only two years of its release. Well, the jig is up now, as the immortal Keanu Reeves returns to a role which is perfectly tailored for his icy stares and general bad-assery.
guardians-galaxy-2
3) Guardians Of The Galaxy 2
Personally, I couldn’t be less excited for this sequel. But, I know all you nerds out ther are, because like “OMG Chris Pratt” and that “cheeky raccoon” and the “tiny tree that can’t speak properly”. As disappointing as the original was for me, there is always merit in intergalactic superheroes who traipse the galaxy causing a stir and kicking some mean alien ass. Here’s to hoping I’m not in for another letdown.
justice-league
2) Justice League
Five years ago, Marvel debuted the first, full-ensemble comic book superhero blockbuster in ‘Avengers Assemble’. Well, it took DC long enough to realise, “hey, EVERYONE loves superhero stuff, let’s make some money”, but they finally kicked into gear last year with the real birth of the DCEU. But, after the polarising debut of ‘Batman v Superman’ last year, DC is looking to dial up a bit of Marvel magic by throwing together Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and the Flash (played by the fantastic Ezra Miller), for what’s certain to be a high stakes opening play by DC’s super team.

1) Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
If the past year proved anything, it’s that there’s nothing more certain than death, taxes and $TAR WAR$ killing it at the box-office. Not only will Episode VIII (or Episode 8 for those of us who aren’t roman) be the latest Lucasfilms installment to gross record numbers, but more importantly, this film will see the fateful return of Luke Skywalker, 34 years in the making. I mean, we may actually get to hear him say something this time around. The second act of Kylo Ren versus Rey and Finn will surely provide a festive delight once again for all the Star Wars fanboys worldwide. Plus, now we’ve got the official title – ‘The Last Jedi’ – the Star Wars saga has really got our tongues wagging,  and we can’t wait to find out what that curious title actually means.

What do you think of our top 10? What films are you most excited for? Let us know, have a great 2017, and may the force be with you.

  1. I’m actually not that excited for most blockbusters this year. The only ones I’m truly excited for are WW, Kong Skull Island, and WftPotA. I’m more excited to see what indie films will surprise me, especially since last year had so many films I never would have seen before, and now I’m interested to give the little guys more of a chance.

    1. That’s an awesome outlook to have! The little guys are often the most deserving of attention and praise. Hopefully the blockbusters can succeed too though, we deserve some good blockbusters after 2016
