Disney have cast Chinese actress Liu Yifei in the title role of their latest film to get the live-action treatment, ‘Mulan’. Yifei is a successful model, singer, and actress who has appeared in films such as ‘The Forbidden Kingdom’ alongide Jackie Chan and Jet Li, ‘Ip Man 3’, and has also appeared in ‘Once Upon a Time’.
Niki Caro (‘The Zookeeper’s Wife’) will helm this live-action remake of the story about young woman who disguises herself as a man to fight against an invading army, to save her elderly father from conscription. Caro has previously said that there are currently no plans to include any of the songs from the original 1998 animation, much to the dismay of the internet!
A casting call from earlier this year also seemingly confirmed there would be no Li Shang in this remake, and instead he would be replaced by a character called Chen Honghui.
Disney have also said we can expect more members of the cast to be announced in the coming weeks.
‘Mulan’ is set to hit cinemas in 2019.
