The Odyssey Awards: 2018 Retrospective

As everyone begins to wind down after Christmas, here at JUMPCUT we’re excitedly gearing up for 2019! Before we’re done with 2018 though, we have a few more treats up our sleeve for you, including our most anticipated films of 2019 list and some big news which we’ll be sharing in a few days!

The retrospective features just some of our favourite films this year* (sadly we couldn’t fit them all in!) including A Quiet Place, BlacKkKlansman, Blindspotting, Bumblebee, Hereditary, Widows, Annihilation, Avengers: Infinity War, Love, Simon, and First Man to name but a few.

We’re sure you’ll likely pick up some notable absences from our video, but we aimed to keep it less than 2 minutes long – so not all our choices made the final cut!

6 Months Later: A Look At Our 2018 Most Anticipated Films And How They Measured Up

Back in December we asked our team what their most anticipated films of 2018 were, and we compiled a list of our top 10. We are now half way through the year, and eight films that made our top ten have been released – but did they live up to our expectations? Click the film titles to be taken to our official verdicts!

The two films in our list we are still twiddling our thumbs waiting for at Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’, which has now been pushed back to 2019, and the return of the Parr family in ‘Incredibles 2’, which we only have a few more weeks to wait for!

“Is this a Star Wars film we needed in the timeline? Not really, but I’m glad we have it because Ron Howard just whetted my appetite for more of this sort of anthology film away from the ‘Episodes’. And on the basis of a certain cameo towards the end, the timeline just got a whole lot spicier!”

#3 – Isle of Dogs

“‘Isle of Dogs’ stumbles occasionally when the dogs aren’t on screen, but this doesn’t diminish the film as an impressive achievement in animation. Most importantly, ‘Isle of Dogs’ is better than ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’  in my opinion. Yes, I went there.”

#2 – Black Panther

“‘Black Panther’ wasn’t just a Marvel superhero movie, it was a rattling of the cages type film. It spoke a lot of truth that we often sweep under the rug about the world we live in. It raises awareness and then offers the global society an olive branch. ‘Black Panther’ is well-crafted in every sense of the word. “

“‘Avengers Infinity War’ at its best is epic, emotional and very, very shocking. It has impressive set pieces and of course it’s very funny. The few faults it does have are going to be down purely to the viewer. A knowledge of all that has happened before is essential. This is not the film for newbies. “

Alex Garland had been floating on the edges of Hollywood fame for years before he made it big. He’s a talented writer who is responsible for genuinely great films like ’28 Days Later’, ‘Never Let Me Go’, and ‘Dredd’, but it was the leap to directing that truly put him on the map. 2014’s ‘Ex Machina’ was a critical smash hit as it earned award nominations in various categories at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and the Oscars. Alex Garland was suddenly a household name and we all waited with bated breath to see what he will do next. Enter ‘Annihilation’.

‘Annihilation’ sees a mysterious governmentally quarantined zone, Area X, being studied to find out what exactly it is. They’ve named it ‘The Shimmer’ after it’s gorgeously shimmery quality when you look at it, but it remains a mystery beyond its name because if you go into The Shimmer, you don’t come back out. Until, that is, Oscar Isaac’s Kane returns from The Shimmer. Cellular biology expert and Kane’s husband, Lena (Portman), is called to help study The Shimmer, and she joins a team of scientists and soldiers to enter The Shimmer on yet another expedition to explore Area X to discover the truths behind it and what exactly happened on Kane’s mission.

Writing that short summary took far too long. ‘Annihilation’ is a film that’s hard to qualify. On the surface, it does seem like a high concept science-fiction, but looking beyond that, it’s a film with tremendous depth and meaning that has spawned hundreds upon hundreds of YouTube videos and articles and film essays studying it. I fear that going into too much detail about the story will ruin the surprise and genuine shocks the film has in store. More than any film I’ve seen recently, ‘Annihilation’ will serve you better if you go in as blind as possible.

What I can talk about, though, is the sheer quality of the film. ‘Annihilation’ is a film that takes a lot of commitment from everyone involved – actors, writers, set designers, special effects artists, editors. It’s a film that has been known to lose a fair few of its viewers because of how complex it becomes as the expedition team head deeper into The Shimmer. It’s a film that plays games with genetic mutations, time and space, using all the elements of the Earth (and elsewhere?) to confound its team and its audience into questioning everything they’re seeing. The end result, however, is a film that truly is firing on all cylinders.

Starting with the actors, the expedition team all leave an impression one way or another. They all have their justifications for going on what’s become a suicide mission, but the film does a masterful job of investigating these characters and letting us understand them as people. Each of the team, from Portman to Thompson to relative newcomer Novotny, gives their character nuances and extra moments where they are just themselves to help them come alive. All of the performances here are terrific; Tessa Thompson’s Josie has a dreamy quality to her as the team’s nature expert, and Dr. Ventress (Jason Leigh) is the most mysterious of the team but Jason Leigh imbues her with a desire for the truth unmatched by anyone else.

Natalie Portman is naturally the stand out given her bigger role in proceedings. She brings all of her talent, her Oscar winning gravitas to a role that requires dedication and commitment to the extremely high concept ideas that are being thrown at her. Lesser actors would have struggled with the workload of the final act, but here is where Portman excels as she gets closer and closer to finding out answers for her burning questions.

‘Annihilation’, all being well, is sure to earn itself accolade after accolade next year, none of which will be more deserving than for special effects. Given all the blockbusters we’ve had this year – ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’, ‘Deadpool 2’ – ‘Annihilation’ stands tall as the best looking film of 2018 so far. The Shimmer itself is a stunning achievement, an idea that seems impossible to convey on screen after having read the book upon which the film is based, is shown beautifully, and every shot of The Shimmer makes you stop and stare in awe at what Garland and co. have achieved. Within The Shimmer, without spoiling too much, the set designers and the special effects team have pulled no punches as they’re allowed to go as batshit crazy as they want given The Shimmer’s mutating quality. Creatures, plants, buildings are all spliced together to create things we haven’t seen on screen before. The characters are amazed by what they’re seeing, and so are we along with them. Whatever you think of ‘Annihilation’, the visuals and the production are universally agreed to be stunners.

‘Annihilation’, tragically, failed to earn the support from distributors around the world. It was shown in cinemas in North America and China, but the rest of the world were given ‘Annihilation’ via Netflix. Netflix are a fantastic company, providing a platform for filmmakers around the world to show their work to as wide an audience as you can imagine, but ‘Annihilation’ is different. ‘Annihilation’ is a film from an Oscar nominated filmmaker, with multiple A-listers attached, and arguably most importantly, it’s different. It’s a book adaptation, sure, but it’s not a sequel, not attached to a franchise, for all intents and purposes, it’s new. Why are studios so scared of new ideas? Why are they so reluctant to take risks. Paramount, the production company who picked up the rights to distribute the film in North America only, aren’t exactly strapped for cash. They have the box-office behemoth that is ‘Transformers’ under their belts, along with franchises like ‘Shrek’, ‘Kung Fu Panda‘, and ‘Mission Impossible’. Take some risks. Let your audience see something different for a change.

‘Annihilation’ is a film that deserves to be seen on as big a screen as possible. When it was released, I went as far as upgrading my Netflix account to 4K purely to watch a film, and in the week or two before the film’s release I bought a new 4K TV. Did I buy a new, big TV purely to watch ‘Annihilation’ in a medium close to what it deserved? I can neither confirm nor deny that. What I’m saying is – ‘Annihilation’ is worth your time. It is worth sitting down and watching something you almost certainly have never seen before. It’s a miraculous achievement in filmmaking across the board, and it deserves your attention. It’s on Netflix right now. Watch it, experience it, and prepare for it to take over your every thought for some time.

Netflix Release Trailer For ‘Annihilation’ As Paramount Skips UK Cinema Release

 

“When her husband vanishes during a secret mission, biologist Lena joins an expedition into a mysterious region sealed off by the U.S. government.”

Netflix has released a new trailer for Alex Garland’s ‘Annihilation’ – a film which Paramount executives have reportedly deemed “too intellectual” to be released in cinemas in most countries. ‘Annihilation’ will only be screened in cinemas across America, Canada, and China, with the film then releasing two weeks later on Netflix – on March 12th.

“At the heart of the problem has apparently been a dispute between producers David Ellison and Scott Rudin. Ellison was reported to have been unhappy that the final cut was “too intellectual” and “too complicated”, and was after changes to the ending, and the character played by Natalie Portman. Rudin, and Alex Garland, were against said changes. The film remains in tact as a consequence, but is paying a price for that: it’s skipping a wide cinema release around the world.” – Den of Geek

I’ve seen nothing but hype for this film since the trailer was first shared, and excitement has only grown as we got ever closer it’s release date. But when rumours started to emerge of Paramount skipping out on cinema releases, and opting to sell Netflix the rights to stream it, we’d hope they’d be shot down once the films review embargo was up. Sadly, this isn’t the case, but we’re ecstatic to hear such positive reviews coming from lucky critics who’ve seen it already.

Whilst some of our team across the pond will be watching this film over the weekend in their local cinema, I’ll sit twiddling my thumbs until March 12th and trying not to let me envy show too much… I can’t promise anything though!

JUMPCUT’s Top 10 Most Anticipated Films Of 2018

Ah, December. The month where every cinephile tries to cram in as many films that they’ve missed throughout the year into one, single month. It’s also the month where we begin to think about the year ahead, and what films are on our radars.

2018 has the potential to be a great year for film. It’s a year filled with big, blockbuster movies, with Marvel looking to add to their already impressive CV, and not to forget the return of the Merc with the Mouth. The new year also promises a few hidden gems, particularly Alex Garland’s return after his promising directorial debut with ‘Ex Machina’,  and the eagerly-anticipated return of Wes Anderson.

In short, there’s a lot to be excited about. So, without further ado, I present to you: JUMPCUT Online’s Top 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2018, as compiled by our marvellous team.

#10 – The Irishman

Martin Scorsese returns in 2018 with a handful of familiar faces. Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino all return under Marty’s direction in what will be the director’s fifth mob film, this time recollecting the assassination of former American labour union leader Jimmy Hoffa. Whilst there’s still speculation whether Netflix will distribute the film during late 2018 or early 2019, we are chomping at the bit to see the return of such a legendary cinematic collaboration.

#9 – A Wrinkle in Time

Based on the novel of the same name by Madeleine L’Engle, visionary director Ava DuVernay will be at the helm of Disney’s next big outing, a multidimensional adventure of a young girl attempting to find her missing father. Starring an ensemble cast including the likes of Chris Pine, Reece Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey and Zach Galifianakis, and not to forget adapted to the big screen by the queen of Disney animations Jennifer Lee, A Wrinkle in Time has the potential to be a wonderful movie.

#8 – Deadpool 2

Also returning this year is everybody’s favourite mercenary – Deadpool. The perfectly casted Ryan Reynolds reprises the role as the potty-mouthed antihero, accompanied by Josh Brolin as newcomer Cable. If the first film is anything to go by, we can expect plenty of vulgar humour and incredible action set pieces in next year’s sequel. You can count my sweet-ass in.

#7 – Incredibles 2

Now, if you’re anything like us, you’ve been waiting years for this. Director Brad Bird and the wonderful ensemble cast all return to perhaps the most eagerly-awaited sequel ever made. Bird once said that he’d never return for an Incredibles sequel unless he could come up with a story that would be just as good as, or even better than, the first film. If that doesn’t make you excited for his sequel, then nothing will.

#6 – Ready Player One

Steven Spielberg returns in 2018 to his beloved Sci-fi genre with an adaptation of Ernest Cline’s revolutionary novel, ‘Ready Player One’; a story of a young man entering the virtual reality world of OASIS to find an Easter Egg. Promising extraordinary visual effects and a catalogue of pop-culture icon cameos from the likes of Freddy Krueger, the Iron Giant and King Kong, Spielberg’s new adventure could be one of the year’s best.

#5 – Annihilation

Also returning to the Sci-fi genre is Alex Garland, who made an impressive directorial debut in 2015 with ‘Ex Machina.’ The film tells the story of a biologist who signs up for an expedition where the rules of nature don’t apply, with the immensely talented Natalie Portman starring as the main lead. Count our words, this could be another successful run-out for Alex Garland. It’s just a shame that us folks in the UK might not be able to see it on the big screen, with Netflix being the front-runners to distribute the film. A damn shame, I tell you.

#4 – Solo: A Star Wars Story

It may come as no surprise to see a Star Wars film included in our list. With the success of ‘Rogue One’, Disney proved that a spin-off Star Wars movie, outside of the main episodic format, could be as well received as the films within the Skywalker saga. This time round, fan-favourite Han Solo receives his stand-alone movie, with Alden Ehrenreich playing the younger version of Harrison Ford’s iconic character. With Ron Howard stepping in to direct after a rift between writer Lawrence Kasdan and former director Chris Miller, it has been reported that Howard has reshot almost the entirety of the movie, but whether or not this will negatively impact the final film, we are not sure. But there is one thing we are sure about – we are all going to see this film regardless.

#3 – Isle of Dogs

Coming in with the bronze medal is Wes Anderson’s forthcoming stop-motion animation, ‘Isle of Dogs’; an Akira Kurosawa inspired story set against the backdrop of Japanese culture. With Tristan Oliver as Director of Photography, we can expect another shining example of Wes Anderson’s distinguishable and mesmerising stop-motion style that was last seen in ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’. We are expecting big things from Anderson, and we are confident that he will not disappoint.

#2 – Black Panther

Now it’s time for the big guns. With Ryan Coogler at the helm of Marvel’s eighteenth addition to the MCU, audiences will be greeted with a catalogue of talented faces, including the likes of Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis and, of course, Chadwick Boseman as the titular character. From such a diverse cast showcasing an array of black leads, this is by far Marvel’s most successful feat in regards to representation on the big screen, proving once and for all that anybody can be a superhero. We cannot wait so see how it all goes down.

#1 – Avengers: Infinity War

Was there ever any doubt? Topping our list is, of course, the gargantuan Marvel blockbuster ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. With parts 1 and 2 holding a staggering budget of almost $1 billion (most of that surely going towards paying the wages of the insane cast on offer), this is going to be the most monumental cinematic moment in all of Hollywood’s history. Marking the tenth anniversary of the dawn of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ‘Infinity War’, if executed successfully, could be Marvel’s biggest accomplishment. Whether you love or hate the MCU, there is one thing for sure – this is going to be incredible. Book your tickets and secure your seats to be the first to see Thanos’s eagerly-anticipated arrival (or Chris Evans sporting a beard, am I right?).
